Remember the most important steps to take after a crash

Even if you are involved in a minor traffic accident, such as a rear-end collision, there will be a lot going on as a result of the crash, and the scene could be chaotic.

At the very least, you will feel shaken up, and you may have some trouble putting your thoughts together. However, there are three important steps to take that are worthwhile to remember.

1. Check everyone for injuries

Your first instinct will be to check yourself for injuries, but you must also see to your passengers and anyone else at the crash scene who may have sustained injuries. If there are injuries of any kind, call 911. When medical personnel arrive, those with the most serious injuries should receive priority attention. If the accident is a minor one and you seem to be okay physically, remember that you should still seek a prompt medical evaluation since there could be underlying issues. Your health is, of course, the primary concern. However, a timely doctor’s report will tie any injuries you might have directly to the vehicle crash, and your attorney will use this information when negotiating an insurance settlement on your behalf.

2. Contact the police

Call law enforcement officials. While waiting for them to arrive, you can exchange insurance information with the other driver, but do not offer an opinion about the cause of the accident. The police will write up a report. Remember to ask for a copy, which will be important for your personal injury attorney to have.

3. Collect information

If you have a cellphone, you can put it to good use in taking pictures of the accident scene and the damage to your vehicle. Write down other information, such as the license plate number of the other vehicle, the location of the crash and the contact information for any witnesses. In your notes, describe the sequence of events leading up to the accident as best you can. Describe the weather, the road conditions and the direction in which all the cars involved were traveling at the time of impact. If you are the victim of the accident, any information you feel up to collecting will be very helpful in terms of the compensation you are entitled to receive.
