Was the driver who caused your accident eating a taco?

If you were the victim of a car crash, do you know what caused it? If you were able to exchange insurance information with the other driver, you may have glimpsed the cellphone on the dash, so you figure the driver may have been calling or texting. However, there was also a spilled soda and a half-eaten taco on the passenger seat. The plot thickens.

You know how dangerous distracted driving can be. Many motor vehicle accidents occur because drivers are using their cellphones for calling, emailing or texting—even checking Facebook or Twitter. But there are other, more traditional forms of distraction that you might not have considered.

Eating on the run

Everyone is short on time, and almost everyone, at one time or another, has slipped behind the wheel while enjoying a take-out meal. It is not unusual to see someone driving on the freeway at 70 miles per hour while eating a burger, hot dog or taco. This is a case of highway multi-tasking that could end badly. By the way, in terms of distraction, hot coffee is the single most dangerous item to have in your car.

The canine passenger

People love to take their dogs with them in the car; after all, these animals are part of the family. They often ride in the back seat, but unlike human passengers, most canines are not wearing restraints such as seat belts. If the driver has to make an emergency stop, the dog is likely to become a harmful projectile and the cause of a car crash.

Are we there yet?

Children, even when they are in the back seat and properly restrained, can be a frustrating distraction. They can become fretful, impatient, hungry or bored. They can spill something, drop something, raised their little voices, cry, scream and in countless other ways, cause a parent to pay more attention to them than to the road. Add this to the category of car trips that could end badly.

Seeking legal help

When you have sustained injuries due to a car crash, reach out to an experienced personal injury attorney. Keep in mind that the law entitles you to fair and just compensation. If you suspect a taco or soda distracted the driver who caused the accident, your attorney will investigate, put all the details together and prepare a strong case on your behalf.
