Alleged DUI hit-and-run leads to murder charges

A 24-year-old man has been charged with murder in California. He's been accused of driving under the influence, crashing into an Uber, killing the driver and fleeing the scene of the accident. The crash happened on Jan. 14, early in the morning.

The driver was not able to flee in his vehicle, so he allegedly ran from the scene on foot. The police tracked him down and arrested him later that same day.

In addition to the murder charge, he's facing another count for being involved in a hit-and-run that resulted in a fatality. He went to court and entered a not guilty plea.

The woman who was killed was 52 years old. The crash between the alleged drunk driver and her black Honda Accord happened at about 3:40 in the morning. She was at an intersection, reports claim, when the younger man ran the red light and hit her. He was driving a silver Infiniti, and the whole thing was caught on camera.

The passenger in the Uber was also badly hurt. He was first said to be in critical condition, and the emergency crews had to cut him from the Accord, but later reports said he'd at least stabilized at the hospital.

If the 24-year-old driver is convicted, he could get anywhere from 26 years behind bars to life in prison.

The woman who was killed had two daughters, and her husband had already passed away. She had two jobs. All of that just underscores how tragic accidents can create significant financial hurdles for family members who are left behind. While emotional pain won't fade with monetary compensation, it is important for those family members to know their legal options to help with the financial burden.
