Serious accident associated with DUI claims 2 lives

Two people -- a woman and girl -- recently lost their lives in a tragic car crash in California. The serious accident took place along the state's 22 Freeway. A man was arrested following the accident, which police said was the result of his decision to drink and drive.

The deadly crash occurred at a little before 1 a.m. According to authorities, a man was driving a car quickly. All of a sudden, his car struck the back of another car in the highway's carpool lane. At that point, the second car hit a wall on the road's right shoulder.

The first car then crashed into a pickup truck that a woman, 33, was driving. A girl, 9, was a passenger in the pickup truck. The truck ended up overturning, and both the truck and the first car skidded until they hit a guard rail. A third car then hit the overturned truck before crashing into the road's center divider. The pickup truck driver and passenger lost their lives in the crash, although no one else involved in the collision suffered serious injuries.

The man, 30, who is said to have caused the chain-reaction collision, was arrested for gross vehicular manslaughter and driving under the influence in connection with the accident. In this situation, the surviving loved ones of the woman and girl who died in the serious accident may decide to file wrongful death claims against the arrested man, seeking the reimbursement of damages. If the man ends up being convicted on his criminal charges, proof of the conviction may be presented in an effort to establish liability in a related civil court proceeding. Only if liability is established will claims for damages be determined. A damage award in a successfully fought claim may help with addressing burial costs and other losses resulting from the deadly California crash.
